What is a BIM Test Drive?

Have you started exploring Building Information Modeling or are you still primarily using 2D CAD? Are you further into BIM implementation, but want to learn from top experts in an intimate hands-on environment?  If so, join us for an interactive four hour hands-on BIM Test Drive and earn 4 AIA Learning Units.

BIM Test Drives are an opportunity for architects, engineers, designers, builders, and interior designers to gain first-hand experience on how to create a Building Information Model (BIM).  Many design and building professionals dive into new technology without understanding the workflow and benefits.  This is your chance to avoid that.

The only requirement for attending a BIM Test Drive is that you have previous CAD experience and a willingness to learn and embrace this easy to use and powerful technology.  Regardless of what software you use for your design, documentation, and estimating, you will find this information extremely beneficial.

What to Expect

Test Drives start at 8am sharp, so please plan to arrive 15 minutes early to get settled in. Tea and coffee are provided. You’ll take a seat in front your choice of seven state-of-the-art laptop computers.

One of the instructors will lead the group through a project step-by-step, on a large projector screen. At least one other instructor will be floating around the room making sure everyone is understanding the process, staying on track and enjoying their experience. No one will be left behind and everyone will complete a two story building. 

In just four hours you will be shown many of the time-saving and profit-increasing techniques to build a model and publish a complete set of documents, including cover sheet, site plan, floor plans, roof plan, elevations, sections, details, interior elevations, and schedules. 

Test drives conclude at noon and you will leave with a full set of digital files for your project, along with all the information you’ll need to accelerate your BIM experience following the class.

1.     You will learn basic 3D modeling techniques for presentation and construction documentation.

2.     You will experience a streamlined BIM workflow and the power of a template.

3.     You will discover different collaboration modes across AEC disciplines.

4.     You will be introduced to the BIM Server allowing easy collaboration within a single project.

5.     You will see how to easy it is to communicate your project through your mobile device!

6.     You will create your own digital set of DWGs, PDFs, BIMx Docs, IFC files, Excel Spreadsheets, and Renderings to take with you.

Chris Clark is a recovering 2D CAD user from 17 years ago.  As president of Visual Motion, Chris has successfully implemented BIM in hundreds of small and medium size firms throughout the Intermountain West. In addition, he has worked on hundreds of consulting projects providing services from design to production/documentation and rendering/animation.
